An NFT use-case for Football fans - The Ballon d'Or ('Golden Ball')
It’s no surprise that with the birth of Web3 NFTs are becoming more and more popular. In France, the international Ballon d'Or ('Golden Ball') Award is using Tezos to mint their own NFT awards granting special access and benefits. The token itself certainly looks cool, but the story here lies in the utility of owning one of these NFTs and the organization’s plans to adapt to Web3.
The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by the French news magazine France Football. Since 1956 the Ballon d'Or award honors the male player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year.
The trophy set in pyrite is inspired by a round, gold-set comet that fell to earth 66 years ago. This year the Ballon d’Or is minting NFT pyrite fragments on Tezos, granting owners of these NFTs special access and benefits.
Common benefits from owning any one of the NFT fragments include limited edition Sorares cards (a popular NFT card game) with great players, signed jerseys, and physical pyrite fragments. Exclusive benefits are provided to owners of the rarest NFT fragments granting very few owners match tickets in France and one lucky winner 20-year access to the Ballon d'Or ceremony.
The goal of the organization seems to be in building a community on Web3. By using NFTs the Ballon d'Or organization can allow people to own, trade, or sell their access to the community. Therefore, many buyers may consider ownership of a pyrite fragment an investment. In the future, the Ballon d'Or wants to expand its rewards.
For football fans interested in more from the Ballon d'Or check out their website where you can directly connect your wallet and purchase your own pyrite NFT fragment today.
